Russo-Serbian political/business elites keep Serbia a geopolitically captive state through dependence on natural gas imports and control of the domestic oil market, and further through control of NGOs and media (including a significant share of so-called “independent” media in Serbia).
We do not know the price Serbia actually pays Russia for natural gas.
While other EU countries are reducing their use of natural gas, Serbia is artificially increasing its dependence on an energy source we do not possess, partly to justify our decision not to align foreign policy with the EU.
The pro-nuclear lobby in Serbia also pursues similarly self-serving geopolitical motives.
Energy alternatives for Serbia: honest and prompt alignment with EU accession chapters; requesting EU assistance for the energy transition; relying on our own domestic resources—energy efficiency, renewables, batteries, biomass, biogas, hydropower, etc.
The Government of Serbia knowingly handed over the fate of NIS (Naftna Industrija Srbije) into the Kremlin’s hands because of its servile relationship toward Russia.
